World Cup 2018

World Cup Trophy

The FIFA World Cup 2018 takes place for the first time ever in Russia. Russia have never won the FIFA World Cup with their best performance was in the 1966 World Cup in England, reaching the semi-finals. Although Russia is technically Europe - they played at Euro 2016 after all, it is a huge continent covering several time zones and many different nationalities, ethnicities, languages and more.

Here at Destination Soccer, we will be exploring the FIFA World Cup 2018 from many different angles. Including the actual football itself. Will Germany retain their 2014 trophy? Or will Argentina reach yet another Final but this time win? What about the 2010 winners Spain? Are they has-beens? And can the Euro 2016 winners Portugal and the Copa America 2016 winners Chile finally claim their first World Cup? And will Brazil have shaken off the nightmares of their 7-1 semi-final defeat at their own World Cup? And are France finally ready to go one step further than their Euro 2016 Final appearance?

And who will dominate on the field? Lionel Messi surprisingly won the Golden Ball - the Player of the tournament in 2014, despite many people believing it should have gone to James Rodriguez of Colombia. Who will win this in 2018? Will Messi even play at the tournament. Or is it time for Cristiano Ronaldo to put his disastrous World Cup 2014 tournament behind him and life theĀ  famous World Cup trophy in July 2018?

And the smaller teams? Belgium are rated no.2 in the world at the moment and were no. 1 for a lot of 2015. Could they finally live up to their billing and their incredible talent to win? And what about the 2006 World Champions Italy. They had a good Euro 2016. Is it time for them to finally reclaim their trophy and win it for the fifth time to equal Brazil's record?

Or could this finally be the time an Asian team or even an African team finally lifts soccer's greatest prize? The USA surprised the world by reaching the semi-final of the Copa America Centenario in 2016. Could they go one further in Russia?
